How to Carry Your Dog on a Cargo Bike

A practical guide to dog transport setups across Bullitt, Omnium, and Muli platforms.

Cargo bikes and dogs are a natural fit. Your dog gets a front-row seat to the world, you get a car-free way to bring them everywhere — the vet, the park, the beach, the café. But getting the setup right matters. The wrong box height, a missing leash anchor, or no ventilation on a hot day turns a great idea into a stressful ride for both of you.

Which platform works for dogs?

Bullitt

The Bullitt's low cargo area is ideal for dogs. The floor sits close to the ground, making it easy for dogs of any size to hop in and out — no lifting required for most breeds. The standardized cargo area (same geometry since 2008) means every box, bag, and accessory from every maker fits every generation of frame.

For dogs, this means deep, enclosed boxes that keep them secure without feeling caged. Large dogs (Labradors, Shepherds, Golden Retrievers) have plenty of room. Purpose-built dog boxes from Badger Bikes and Velogut include ventilation cutouts and leash anchors. The DITW Cargo Dog Bag is a sewn-to-order soft option with mesh ventilation windows and a removable cushion.

Omnium

The Omnium is a different beast. The cargo platform sits higher than the Bullitt — at rack height, not ground level. Your dog rides up high with a better view, but needs to be more agile to get on and off. The open rack design gives you flexibility: strap a crate directly to the rack, use the Omnium foldable box, or go with a dedicated dog bag.

The Omnium is especially popular with adventure cyclists who travel with their dogs. Bagaboo makes oversized Cordura bags for every Omnium variant. Dyed in the Wool offers custom-sewn frame bags for the Mini-Max.

Muli

The Muli is a compact cargo bike — smaller cargo area than the Bullitt or Omnium. It works well for small to medium dogs (up to about 15–20kg comfortably). The basket-style cargo area is open and easy to access. VEOvelo's rain covers keep your dog dry while maintaining ventilation, and REHpunkt's handmade Cordura covers use Tenax sail buttons for easy on/off.

What to look for in a dog setup

Box depth and containment

Your dog needs to be below the rim of whatever they're riding in. A dog standing with their head above the box edge can jump out at the worst moment. For most breeds, a box depth of at least 30–40cm keeps them contained without feeling trapped. Hard boxes (plywood, aluminum) are more secure. Soft bags are lighter but a determined dog can push through mesh panels.

Leash anchor point

Always have a way to secure your dog inside the cargo area. A short leash attached to a harness (never a collar) clipped to a solid anchor point prevents jumping while allowing them to sit, stand, and turn around. Some boxes come with built-in anchor points. For others, a carabiner bolted through the floor works.

Ventilation

Critical in warm weather. A closed box or bag without airflow becomes an oven. Look for mesh panels, open tops, or canopies with open backs. If using a solid box, never close the top completely.

Non-slip surface

Dogs need grip. A smooth plywood or aluminum surface is terrifying for a dog when the bike turns or brakes. Add a rubber mat, a yoga mat cut to size, or a blanket that won't slide.

Training your dog for cargo bike riding

Don't just put your dog in the box and start riding. Start with the bike stationary, kickstand down. Let your dog explore the cargo area, sniff around, get comfortable. Reward them for getting in and staying calm. Do this for a few days.

Then sit on the bike with your dog in the cargo area, still stationary. Rock the bike gently. Reward calm behavior. First rides should be short, slow, and on quiet streets. Some dogs take to it immediately — Border Collies, terriers, and working breeds tend to love it. Anxious breeds may need more patience. Never force a dog that's clearly scared.

The accessories you'll want

  • A good harness — attach the leash to a harness, never a collar. A harness distributes force across the chest.
  • A non-slip mat — any rubber mat cut to size. Keeps your dog stable during turns and braking.
  • A water bottle and collapsible bowl — dogs dehydrate faster when exposed to wind.
  • A blanket or cushion — a dog that associates the cargo area with a soft, familiar blanket will hop in willingly.
  • A rain cover with ventilation — for year-round riding.
