Cargo bike insurance in the UK
Your cargo bike is worth £3,000 to £10,000+. In 2024, bicycle theft in the UK rose 15% year on year. E-bikes and cargo bikes are targeted at three to four times the rate of standard cycles. Around 90% of theft cases are closed without a suspect being identified.
If you're relying on your home insurance to cover your cargo bike, you're probably underinsured. This guide explains your actual options.
How cargo bike insurance works in the UK
Two paths: adding your bike to your home contents insurance, or buying specialist cycle insurance. For most cargo bike owners, home insurance isn't enough.
Your home insurance: the basics
Most standard home contents policies cap bicycle cover between £500 and £1,500 per bike. Your cargo bike cost three to ten times that. Even if you specify it as a high-value item, coverage may only apply while the bike is stored inside your home or a locked garage.
The gaps that catch people
- Accidental damage: Home insurance rarely covers damage while riding. This accounts for ~40% of all cycle insurance claims.
- Communal storage: Stolen from a communal hallway or shared bike store? Many home insurers decline the claim.
- Battery: Treated as an accessory with limited cover. Replacement can cost over £500.
- Premium impact: A bicycle theft claim can increase your premiums across all household cover for years.
What home insurance covers
- Theft from inside your home or locked garage
- Fire and flood damage
- Sometimes theft away from home (if personal possessions cover is added)
What home insurance does NOT cover
- Accidental damage while riding
- Damage during transport
- Vandalism unrelated to theft
- Battery failure or motor defects
- Wear and tear
- Public liability
- Accessories and child seats
Specialist cycle insurance: the upgrade you probably need
What specialist cover adds
- New-for-old replacement: full current market value, no depreciation
- Accidental damage: covered at home and away, including while riding
- Theft 24/7: covered anywhere, not just at home
- Battery as a component: full replacement value
- Public liability: typically £1m-£5m included
- Accessories: child seats, rain covers, lights, panniers, all covered
- Multi-bike discounts: 50-60% off additional bikes
- Worldwide cover and roadside assistance
New-for-old matters
Without new-for-old, a 3-year-old cargo bike worth £6,000 new might only pay out £3,500-4,000. With new-for-old, you get what it costs to replace the bike today.
EAPC rules: is your cargo bike legal?
This matters for insurance because if your bike doesn't meet EAPC regulations, your policy is void.
- Motor must not exceed 250 watts continuous rated power
- Motor assistance must cut out at 15.5 mph (25 km/h)
- Functional pedals capable of propelling the bike
- Pedal assist only. Throttle only permitted up to ~3.7 mph
- Rider must be at least 14 years old
If your bike has been de-restricted or has an off-road mode that removes the speed limit, it's non-compliant. Insurers treat it as a voiding modification.
Theft in the UK: the numbers
Highest risk: London (~20,000/year), Oxford, Cambridge, York, Bristol. Sources: ONS, Cycling UK, BikeRegister, police.uk.
Lock requirements
Without the right lock, your theft claim will be declined. This is the single most common reason for rejected claims.
Sold Secure ratings
- Bronze: Cover up to ~£250
- Silver: Cover up to ~£1,500
- Gold: Required for bikes over £1,500
- Diamond: Often mandated for bikes over £5,000
In 2024, Sold Secure introduced a separate Powered Cycle rating that includes angle grinder testing. For high-value e-cargo bikes, look for Powered Cycle Diamond (e.g. Hiplok D1000, Litelok X3).
Locked TO, not just locked. Your bike must be locked through the frame to an immovable object. A frame lock alone is not enough.

Visit ETA →Commercial and courier insurance
If you use your cargo bike for deliveries or paid transport, a personal policy will not cover you.
- Hire and Reward: Required for couriers. Zego offers pay-as-you-go H&R insurance.
- Public liability for couriers: Amazon Flex requires specialist PL and personal accident insurance.
- Goods in Transit: Covers items you're carrying. Essential for high-value deliveries.
- Fleet insurance: Laka and Bikmo offer fleet policies with dynamic bike management.
Roadside assistance: the recovery problem
Reimbursement model (most providers): Bikmo, Laka, and Sundays offer £150-200 to cover a taxi or train home. You organise the transport yourself.
Active recovery (ETA only): Dispatches a vehicle to pick up the bike, rider, and passengers. For families relying on a cargo bike as primary transport, this is a critical difference.
What you should do
- Check your home insurance. What's your bicycle cover limit? Ask about away-from-home cover, accidental damage, and battery replacement.
- Consider specialist cycle insurance. If your cargo bike is worth over £1,500, specialist cover pays for itself.
- Check your lock. Sold Secure Gold or Diamond? Powered Cycle rated? Can it lock through the frame to an immovable object?
- Check EAPC compliance. De-restricted or modified beyond 250W/15.5mph? Your insurance is void.
- If you ride commercially: Get proper Hire & Reward cover.
- Save your receipt, frame number, battery serial, and photos. Register with BikeRegister.
