Cargo Bike Canopies & Rain Covers: What Actually Keeps Kids and Cargo Dry

I live in Copenhagen and ride a Bullitt every day, all year. It rains here roughly every third day, and nobody I know stops riding because of it. The difference between the people who keep riding and the people who put the bike away in October is almost never the bike. It's the rain setup.

When people search for a "bike canopy" or a "cargo bike rain cover" they usually mean one of three different things, and the products are completely different:

1. A canopy: a hood over the cargo box so your kids stay dry while you ride.
2. A rain cover or rain tent: something that keeps the cargo itself dry, with nobody sitting under it.
3. A full bike cover: a tarp-style cover for when the bike is parked outside.

This guide covers all three, with every option we list in the catalogue, real prices, and what I would actually buy. Quick transparency note before the recommendations: I work at Larry vs Harry, the makers of the Bullitt. They make one of the canopies below. Canopies: riding with kids in the rain

This is the big one. If you carry children, a canopy is the single accessory that decides whether the bike works in winter or not. Kids do not tolerate sideways rain in an open box, and they should not have to.

Canopies are platform-specific. A canopy is built for one bike and usually one box, so start from what you ride:

A few things the table doesn't tell you:

• The canopy has to match your box, not just your bike. The Rad3 canopies are built for their own KidsBox. The Larry vs Harry canopy is built around their box and honeycomb board setup. If you run a custom or third-party box, check with the maker before ordering.
• In the US, BLAQ Design makes their canopies domestically and is the obvious pick, both for shipping cost and because a canopy in a box from Europe is a bulky, expensive parcel.
• If you ride a Muli, the equivalent products are basket covers rather than full canopies, one section down.

Yes, a canopy costs as much as a decent used commuter bike. It also turns the box into a dry, wind-free cabin, which in practice buys you four extra months of riding per year. Per month of use it might be the best value accessory on the whole bike.

Rain covers: keeping cargo dry

No passengers, just stuff that should not get wet. This category is cheaper and less platform-sensitive.

For Bullitt riders, Clarijs in the Netherlands makes proper rain tents: the Rain Tent for the MadJax box and the Rain Tent BBX Sidepanel, both €269, plus a simple Transportbox Cover at €75 if all you need is a lid. Fahrer Berlin takes a different approach with the Hood Cargo Cover (€289), a soft hood that packs down when you don't need it, and they ship to the US.

For Muli riders the covers are basket-specific and this corner of the market is surprisingly well served. VEOvelo makes the KALLISTO Basket Cover (€89), a rain cover for the basket (€95) and even a KALLISTO version that fits over a child seat (€119). REHpunkt does a neat basket cover with Tenax buttons (€85), and MultiCover covers the whole front end. All of these ship to the US.

Full bike covers: parking outside

If your cargo bike lives on the street, a cover keeps rain, UV and prying eyes off it. Two makers in the catalogue specialise in exactly this:

• BikeParka (UK) makes a dedicated Cargo Bike Cover (£109.95) plus longtail-specific covers from £92.95, including a version cut around child seats for Tern and Aventon longtails. Ships to the US.
• Studio Vollebak (NL) makes a simpler Cargo Bike Cover at €74.95 that fits most box bikes.

One clever thing while we're here: Studio Vollebak also makes a Rain Canopy Lock (€32.95) that stops someone opening your canopy zipper while the bike is parked. The DIY corner

The community designs some of this stuff for free. If you have access to a 3D printer, there are printable fixes like a battery rain cover for Shimano-equipped Mulis, a rain cover support bracket that stops a sagging cover resting on your cargo, and a rain cover plug with a peak for the Urban Arrow. What I would actually buy

• Bullitt with kids: a proper canopy, full stop. I am biased (see above), but the honest version of the advice is: buy whichever canopy fits the box you already have, from the maker closest to you. In Europe that decision is mostly Larry vs Harry, Convoy or Hardus by preference and budget. In the US, BLAQ.
• Bullitt hauling cargo, no kids: the Clarijs Transportbox Cover at €75 does most of the job for a fraction of the money. Upgrade to a rain tent if you regularly haul things that really cannot get wet.
• Muli: VEOvelo's KALLISTO line, and add the DIY support bracket if the cover sags.
• Any bike parked outside: Studio Vollebak's €74.95 cover if you want cheap and simple, BikeParka if you want heavier fabric and a longtail fit. Plus a real lock.

FAQ

Do I need a canopy or a rain cover?

If a person sits in the box, you want a canopy. If it's only cargo, a rain cover or rain tent does the same job for a quarter of the price.

How much does a cargo bike canopy cost?

Full canopies for a front loader run €425 to €690 depending on maker and box. Cargo-only rain covers run €75 to €289. Full bike covers for parking are €75 to £110.

Does any canopy fit any cargo bike?

No. Canopies are built for a specific bike and usually a specific box. Check the product page for platform fit, and when in doubt ask the maker before ordering. That is also why "universal" canopies you find on big marketplaces tend to disappoint.

Can I leave the canopy on when the bike is parked?
