GPS trackers for e-bikes and cargo bikes
Aftermarket options compared
A good lock buys you time. A GPS tracker gets your bike back. Bikes with active GPS tracking have recovery rates of up to 80%. Without one, you're looking at roughly 5-15% depending on your country. For a cargo bike worth €5,000+, that's the difference between a bad week and a financial disaster.
This guide covers the tracker options available as aftermarket solutions, what your insurer actually requires, and why an AirTag probably isn't enough.
Full disclosure: do what I say, not what I do. I currently don't have a GPS tracker on my analogue Bullitt. (Please, insurers, don't read this.) But seriously, do better than me. Losing a cargo bike is sad. Imagine the joy of finding it again? Go get that GPS, you wonderful cargo rider.

AirTag vs dedicated GPS: the honest comparison
Let's get this out of the way first, because half the people reading this have already taped an AirTag under their saddle.
How an AirTag actually works
An AirTag has no GPS receiver and no cellular connection. It emits a Bluetooth signal picked up by nearby Apple devices. When a passing iPhone detects your AirTag, it relays the location to your Find My app. That's it.
- No real-time tracking. Sporadic pings, not a live route.
- Anti-stalking alerts. A thief's iPhone notifies them within 30-60 minutes. They find it and throw it away.
- No motion alerts. You find out when you check the app.
- No insurance recognition. No insurer accepts an AirTag for premium discounts or coverage requirements.
How a dedicated GPS tracker works
A proper tracker has its own GPS receiver and its own cellular modem (4G LTE-M or NB-IoT). No dependency on nearby phones.
- Real-time tracking: position updates every 10-30 seconds during theft
- Instant motion alerts pushed to your phone
- Works indoors (NB-IoT penetrates concrete and metal)
- Silent operation, no anti-stalking alerts to the thief
- Insurance recognised, often with 10-25% premium discounts
| AirTag / Bluetooth | Dedicated GPS | |
|---|---|---|
| Network | Crowdsourced (nearby iPhones) | Independent cellular (4G/NB-IoT) |
| Update frequency | Sporadic | Real-time (10-30s intervals) |
| Theft alert | None (manual check) | Instant push notification |
| Thief awareness | High (alerts within 30-60 min) | Low (silent) |
| Subscription | None | €2-8/month |
| Insurance accepted | No | Yes (most providers) |
| Recovery rate | Unknown | Up to 80% |
| Best for | Backup layer | Primary theft recovery |
An AirTag is a €35 backup. It's not a security strategy. If your cargo bike is worth €3,000+, you need a dedicated GPS tracker.
What your insurer requires

- UK (Laka, Bikmo): Lower risk profile, informal premium benefit
