OPENCARGO.BIKE

Independent guide to insuring your cargo bike. OpenCargo does not recommend one provider over another.

Cargo bike insurance in Belgium

Your cargo bike is worth €3,000 to €10,000+. Roughly 100,000 bicycles are stolen in Belgium every year. Brussels alone sees over 5,000 reported bike thefts annually, up 70% since 2015. E-bikes and cargo bikes are prime targets.

Whether you bought your cargo bike outright, got it through a leasing plan, or are about to. This guide explains how insurance actually works in Belgium, what your options are, and where the gaps hide.

The three legal categories: which one is your bike?

Pedelec / E-bike (up to 250W, 25 km/h)

The vast majority of cargo bikes. Motor assists only while pedalling, cuts out at 25 km/h. Legally a regular bicycle. No licence, no registration, no mandatory insurance. Third-party liability is covered by your RC Familiale.

Motorised bike (up to 1000W, 25 km/h)

Higher power, same speed limit. Common in cargo bikes needing extra torque. Requires a Certificate of Conformity (COC). Rider must be at least 16. No mandatory insurance beyond RC Familiale if pedal-assist only.

Speed pedelec (up to 4000W, 45 km/h)

Legally a moped (Class B). Driver's licence required. Approved helmet mandatory. Registration with DIV and licence plate required. Standard cargo bike insurance does NOT cover speed pedelecs.

How cargo bike insurance works in Belgium

For pedelecs and motorised bikes, insurance is voluntary. But at €5,000+, your cargo bike is one of the most expensive things you regularly leave outside.

Theft-only (Diefstal / Vol)

Covers theft and damage during theft attempts. Cheaper, but leaves you exposed to crashes, vandalism, and component failure.

Omnium (All-risk)

The standard for cargo bikes. Bundles theft, accidental damage (even self-inflicted), vandalism, and often breakdown assistance.

New value replacement

Without this, your insurer depreciates from day one. The period varies hugely:

  • Qover: 36 months (best on market)
  • Belfius Direct, Yuzzu, DVV: 24 months
  • Ethias, AG Insurance, Callant: 12 months

For a €6,000 bike, the difference between 12 and 36 months of new value is thousands of euros.

The English Deductible (Franchise Anglaise)

Some providers (notably Qover) use this model: if the repair cost is below a threshold (e.g. 10% of bike value), you pay. If it exceeds the threshold, the insurer pays everything with zero deductible. For cargo bikes where even minor repairs are expensive, this often works in the owner's favour.

Lock requirements

Belgian insurers almost universally require certified locks.

  • ART-2: Baseline for e-bikes. Minimum for most theft policies.
  • ART-3 / ART-4: Often required for cargo bikes over €4,500.
  • Sold Secure Gold / Diamond: Highest level. Diamond includes angle grinder resistance.

Two-lock requirement: For bikes above €4,500, many insurers require two locks.

GPS tracking: Kingpolis makes it mandatory for bikes over €4,500. Qover gives 20% discount. ~80% recovery rate vs ~14.5% without.

Leasing: insurance is included (until it isn't)

Salary exchange leasing (B2Bike, Cyclis, MHC Mobility) includes Omnium for 36-48 months. When the lease ends and you buy at residual value, the insurance disappears. Sort your own cover before the buyout.

The bicycle allowance: up to €0.36/km tax-free for bike commuters. Annual ceiling €3,500 for 2025. Often enough to cover leasing costs and insurance combined.

Commercial and logistics insurance

Belgium's cargo bike logistics sector delivered 5.25 million parcel equivalents in 2024, up 70% year-on-year. A personal Omnium does not cover commercial deliveries.

  • Goods in Transit: Essential for high-value deliveries.
  • Commercial liability: Personal RC Familiale does not cover professional riding.
  • Fleet insurance: Laka offers fleet policies with dynamic bike management.

What you should do

  1. Know your bike's legal category. Pedelec, motorised, or speed pedelec? This determines everything.
  2. Check your RC Familiale. It covers liability but NOT theft or damage to your own bike.
  3. Get Omnium if over €3,000. Theft-only leaves you exposed. Battery replacement alone can cost €600-1,000.
  4. Prioritise new value replacement. 36 months (Qover) vs 12 months can mean €2,000+ difference.
  5. Check your lock. ART-2 minimum. ART-3/4 for bikes over €4,500. Two locks often required.
  6. Consider GPS tracking. 20% discount with Qover. ~80% recovery rate.
  7. If your lease is ending: Sort insurance before the buyout.
  8. Register your bike. MyBike.brussels or national registry. 3.5× higher recovery rate.
